I provide clinical consultation to clinicians at any point in their development. As a New Jersey certified clinical social work supervisor I work with early career professionals who are seeking their independent license. As a certified psychonalyst also certified psychoanalytic supervision , I work with mid-career professionals seeking to learn more about how to work psychodynamically and psychoanalytically and with psychoanalytic candidates at the two institutes where I serve on the faculty.
Currently, I offer both individual and small group supervision, both in person and online. While individual supervision allows for greater focus on one’s own work, small group supervision is more affordable and allows participants to learn from one another.
My approach to supervision is primarily psychoanalytic, as that is my training and orientation. Within psychoanalysis, I tend to work relationally, with a theoretical focus on object relations.
In group supervision, participants take turns presenting case material that we discuss with an
eye on understanding and working with unconscious resistance, effectively
utilizing transference and countertransference in the treatment, and
understanding cases through a psychoanalytically informed lens. We address
such issues as premature termination, handling of money and missed sessions,
and other matters concerning the treatment frame, as well as diagnostic
concerns and decisions about treatment interventions. At times, I select a relevant article which we discuss as it pertains to cases we have been processing.
Supervision groups that stay together over time offer added benefits that may not be so obvious. Often, a parallel process develops between the relationships in the group and the relationship between the therapist and the patient (or even the relationships between members of the patient’s family). This is not only fascinating when it happens but also very instructive and helpful in deepening the work.
In individual supervision, I allow the supervisee to determine the focus of the work, while offering gentle guidance and support.
If you are interested in either individual or group consultation or supervision, please call my office to arrange for a meeting.
